Impact of Posture on Breathing

Posture plays a key role in better breathing. Walking with shoulders rounded and the head lurching forward makes diaphragmatic breathing more difficult, thus creating less optimal usage of the lungs.

Breathing Dysfunction in Athletes

Kinetic chain movement is not just about foot strike, shin angle, hip displacement, and arm and leg locomotion. A dysfunctional breather will invariably create negatively affect a runner’s movements. In fact, the kinetic chain is said to have a greater negative impact upon an athlete than even a lower VO2 max (McKeown 2020).

Rhinitis and Adaptation to Nose Breathing

Rhinitis is the excessive production of mucous in the nasal passage way and can be an expected initial effect of initial nose breathing. It will dissipate after a few weeks of training.

Headaches and Breathing Solutions

Athletes who engage in extreme hypoxic training will often suffer headaches due to a lack of oxygen. The cure is to engage in nasal and diaphragmatic breathing as soon as possible.

Leg Elevation for Post-Workout Recovery

Elevating the legs after a strenuous workout helps the heart to pump much needed oxygen from the red blood cells to the legs by using gravity as a tool to aid in recovery.
